TransAlta is Canada's largest publicly traded generator and marketer of electricity and renewable power. The company operates facilities in Canada, the United States and Australia. TransAlta's focus is to efficiently operate biomass, geothermal, wind, hydro, natural gas and coal facilities in order to provide customers with a reliable, low-cost source of power. TransAlta is recognized for its leadership in sustainability and is listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index, the FTSE4Good Index and the Jantzi Social Index.

Commissioned in 2003, TransAlta's Sarnia Regional Cogeneration Plant has three Alstom 11N2 gas turbines, each capable of generating between 102 and 118 megawatts, two condensing steam turbines that can produce 120 megawatts, and back-pressure steam turbines capable of generating 56 megawatts. The plant also incorporates a fired boiler, river water pump houses, and water treatment plants.

While the plant has long term contracts to supply steam and electricity to LANXESS, NOVA and Suncor Energy, it can also provide Bluewater Energy Park tenants with superheated steam at three different temperature/pressure levels and lower priced electricity by sharing the "behind-the-fence" benefits, avoiding certain transmission and overhead costs typically charged when taking power from the Ontario power grid.

The Sarnia plant is a cogeneration facility which generates electricity and steam from a single energy source - natural gas. Natural gas turbines generate electricity and heat which, in turn, produces steam. The steam can then be used for industrial processes or to generate additional electricity through a steam turbine, thereby increasing efficiency. Generating electricity and thermal energy in a cogeneration plant results in higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
